It’s an unfortunate fact of nature: As people age, their metabolism slows down and they have a tendency to pack on excess pounds. Researchers now believe that a daily cup of green tea may help slow the progression of weight gain that occurs with age.
In a study, a team of scientists from Penn State compared the weight gain of two groups of rodents that were fed a high-fat diet, one of which was supplemented with the green tea compound EGCG and one that was not.
They observed a 45 percent slower weight gain in animals that were fed the green tea extract. Additionally, these rodents had a 30 percent increase in fat found in their feces, suggesting that EGCG had an effect on fat absorption.
“There seems to be two prongs to this,” said researcher Joshua Lambert. “First, EGCG reduces the ability to absorb fat and, second, it enhances the ability to use fat.”
Authors of the study noted that it is unlikely that green tea suppresses appetite, because rodents consumed the same amount of food during the trial period.
